When I first learnt to meditate, it was through Transcendental Meditation. Great introduction - a lot of background information before you even got to shut your eyes. There was also a mystique around it that made you want to continue to practice. Initially I was distracted by any little noise - it would jar me out of meditation. I later learnt a different technique with the Foundation for International Spiritual Unfoldment (Gururaj Ananda Yogi) which seemed to be easier to maintain that "peace" during the 20 minutes. Sometimes I'd use soft music - especially when I lived in a noisy dorm room. It's now 28 years later and I still like using music - I have a dog that snores loudly with her nose pressed to the underside of the door to the meditation room! With that in mind, I composed a relaxing piece of music almost in trance while I wrote. I called it "Ananda" - which means Bliss. People who have bought the CD are raving about how it is helping them relax so totally. Maybe I'm on to something! I think you really have to know what it feels like to meditate or be in trance to know whether what you're writing is in the same vibration.
